MONOCLE addresses and strengthens EO methodology by providing crucial reference measurements to remove and correct for major sources of error in satellite products. This includes the measurable observation of water-leaving radiance and atmospheric transmission properties. In addition, the network will include novel and existing high-frequency measurements of in-water biogeochemical and physical parameters. These are of direct interest to people working in environmental monitoring. MONOCLE will further improve their added value through advanced signal processing (e.g. drift detection, signal coherence, removal of surface effects).

The unique approach taken by MONOCLE simultaneously strengthens synoptic monitoring from proximal and remote sensing platforms and characterises uncertainty in Earth Observation products.
