MONOCLE combines all pillars of in situ observation in a network which contains:

  1. Regional high-end autonomous fixed-position instrumentation with traceable calibration
  2. Unmanned platforms for spatial assessment, both supervised and unsupervised (for remote areas)
  3. Citizen observations supported by dedicated sensors and low-cost smartphone extensions.

By collecting measurements which overlap in space and time as well as with satellite data, the network can reach a high degree of measurement traceability to trusted sources. This overlap will be exploited to quantify measurement uncertainty, but as the network of sensors expands this capability can be exploited for remote and unsupervised sensor calibration.
